FAQ's about Parent Coaching

Tapping into the resources in your village to support your parenting is a wise step that requires knowledge and trust so that you don’t mistakenly welcome the village idiot into your inner circle. Trust your inner parenting wisdom. It will be a valuable asset in our coaching relationship.

How does coaching differ from talk therapy?

Talk therapy tends to focus on the past with the intent to heal old wounds so they don’t negatively impact your present and future. While this is very important and brave personal work, coaching is different. Coaching certainly involves talking, but not the kind that opens up Pandora’s box and examines its contents.

So what is parent coaching then?

The term parent is a catch-all used here to refer to any primary caregivers who want coaching support: grandparents, legal guardians, foster parents, step-parents, same-sex parents, single parent, etc. Parent coaching is a service that guides you to generate solutions that are the best fit for your family. In this dynamic relationship, a coach helps you deepen your learning and forward your action. Understanding your family’s unique dynamics, strengths, values, challenges and hopes is essential to the foundation of coaching. You are the expert resource on your child and family. Coaching services are a good investment of your time and money if you want goal-oriented and solution-focused methods. Parent coaching enhances your effective parenting for relationships that thrive and support the well being of your child.

Why do I need a parent coach?

You need a parent coach when:

  • your parenting behaviors do not consistently and reliably match your intentions;
  • you and your parenting partner lack a consistent and reliable united front;
  • you want to increase your parenting capabilities for safeguarding against today’s negative influences and behavioral/mental health afflictions;
  • your relationship with your child lacks the mutual respect, love, trust, and connection that you desire.

How do I get the most out of parent coaching?

Force of Nurture values customer satisfaction. You increase your chances of becoming a happy camper by:

  • making coaching sessions a priority;
  • being able and willing to change how you parent;
  • offering honesty about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors;
  • getting out of your comfort zone of habitual attitudes and choices;
  • practicing your parenting solutions;
  • striving for excellence, not perfection.

What outcomes can I expect from parent coaching?

Using the International Coaching Federation’s (ICF) Core Competencies and Code of Ethics, coaching supports parents through an engaging process of interactive sessions personalized to each unique situation and family circumstance.

Force of Nurture’s strengths-based coaching model provides the structure for partnering with parents to:

  • unscramble the messiness of current relational patterns;
  • re-establish balance;
  • fortify parent-child relationships;
  • manifest sustainable family harmony.

Working with Force of Nurture, you will become an effective parent who:

  • sees the bigger picture (parenting is a marathon, not a sprint);
  • has the confidence to do what’s in your child’s long-term best interest (even if you think she will be mad at you);
  • communicates with love and respect (yes, even when she rolls her eyes);
  • teaches by example how to successfully do this thing called life. (Step 1: accept your imperfections.)

When and where does parent coaching occur?

Over 3-months you will receive (1) 90-minute visioning session plus (8) additional 50-minute sessions of coaching support. These tele-coaching meetings follow the industry norm of virtual coaching by phone.

What can I expect from sessions?

We’ll explore what makes you tick as a parent:

  • The experiences, values, and beliefs you bring to your role as parent
  • The values you hope your child will live by
  • The specific worries about your child that keep you up at night
  • The hot buttons that your child knows how to push

Sessions will also include:

  • Establishing what you want to focus on
  • Defining what you want to accomplish
  • Creating action steps to achieve your desired outcome
  • Troubleshooting behaviors and situations
  • Techniques for being available, responsive and secure for your child
  • Setting an intention for the days until the next session

During each session, we’ll check-in and do a review that includes:

  • What worked and didn’t work?
  • What needs to be adjusted?
  • What got in the way of any action items and next steps?
